Late 19th century.

An exceptionally nice thing, a so-called tramp art sewing box built from layers on layers of carefully progressively stacked strips of wood, each edge chip-carved in the typical tramp art style to produce a repeated notch pattern that when nailed together forms mesmerising patterns and depth.

Popular between the 1870s and 1940s, tramp art objects were often made with reclaimed wood (as I suspect this sewing box to be) such as cigar or shipping boxes, utilising the most simple tools available such as pen knives and nails. Earlier examples of tramp art are more likely to be made from cigar boxes specifically as, by law, cigar companies at the time were not allowed to reuse their boxes.

This box features lovely and unusual triangulated feet, wall panels three layers deep, framing stepped and notched roundels to each side. The hinged lid also frames a gorgeously preserved and very old original velvet covered pin cushion, which naturally shows evidence of well over a century of use.

Specifications:

Height: 16.5cm / Width: 23cm / Depth: 15cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/7883/1907/files/unique-tramp-art-dutch-sewing-box-from-cigar-box-wood-antique-accessories-for-sale-sad-gallery-london-2.jpg?v=1788178588
