Horology at heart, Smiths produced clocks, wristwatches and precision instruments from 1851 until 1979. In its 128 years of operation, Smiths moved with the times and this Timecal modernist wall clock is a prime example of redefined aesthetics and material developments. From developing automobile clocks to high-precision aeronautical instruments, the use of stainless steel in this piece is emblematic of the work Smiths’ between 1959-66.

This poppy red floral silhouette is a softened motif in comparison to the historic ‘sunburst’ wall clocks, whereas this piece is made as a work of functional art. Brushed stainless steel petals nestle within red outlines, organically curved outwards from the wall, drawing closer to the dial.

Numerical figures are represented minimally with 12 evenly spaced steel cylinders, pointed by two striped hands. The minute hand is bent into a stepped form, leading from the centre to the raised dial. The multiple levels in the clock elevate the usually overlooked wall ornament, providing a sense of enjoyment to watching time tick by.
