Made by English potter Edward Hughes, this expertly crafted reduction fired footed bowl features a rich and earthy wood ash glaze textured around the outside with subtly curved vertical indents typical of Hughes' work, easily mistaken for the likes of David Leach. His mark on this example is almost fully obscured by the glaze that pools around the exposed foot, which would usually be glazed too.

The age of this bowl likely dates to the later 1980's after the opening of Hughes' workshop in Cumbria, following a career established in Japan and his first pottery studio in Shiga. His resulting work - this bowl included - showcases many of the elements found in Japanese ceramics that heavily inspired his forms, patterns and colours.
