Brass Hand Mirror, Ivar Åhlenius Björk, Ystad Metall, Sweden. 1920's.
Ivar Åhlenius Björk is a well-known figure from the Scandinavian modernist period, designing a wide range of brass and bronze accessories during his career. The classic 'Lily' candleholder he designed in 1939 is an icon of sculptural simplicity; this very rare hand mirror produced by Ystad Metall showcases many similar qualities.
The mirror is two-faced, of medium weight, the squared handle flanked by layered sculptural brass strips mimicking leaves on a stem. These are placed with precision and held in place with tiny rivets, which are also used on the perimeter of the frame. Brass has been used for each component, every surface showcasing a beautiful and consistent patina.
