Ceramic Wall Relief, North America. 1970's.
A unique glazed ceramic wall relief by an unknown artist, originally from North America. It is likely to be a depiction of the indigenous peoples who traditionally inhabit the arctic and subarctic regions including Canada. The visual comparison can be drawn to snow goggles, typically carved from bone, ivory or driftwood, used in the harsh local conditions to reduce glare and subsequently snow blindness.
This 'mask' is simple in construction using thick clay cuts with geometric shapes and perforations. An inky blue glaze covers the front and sides and purple drips run in all directions on the face. With the brutalist composition there are naturally sharper edges - there are some tiny nicks to the nose and mouth but this does not affect how well this piece displays (either wall mounted or leant on a shelf)
