Small Arts & Crafts Ashtray & Matchbox Holder, Hugo Berger, Goberg, Germany. Circa 1910s.
Designed by Hugo Berger for Goberg in the early 20th century, a matching ashtray and matchbox holder with striker, made in West Germany. There is something particularly interesting about the elegant scale of these pieces and the simple forms used, alongside the contrasting and somewhat medieval textures and darkened rust throughout.
These are very much in keeping with the Arts & Crafts design movement with their rivets and hand applied yet uniform hammered textures. What drew me to these initially was that gorgeous warm patina, and huge admiration for the the sculptural qualities. Although only small, these are both brilliantly functional and display amazingly well.
