Early 1900s Regency Chess Set and Unique Chess Board by Taylor Stevens, England. C20th.
Early 1900s Regency Chess Set and Unique Chess Board by Taylor Stevens, England. C20th.
A combination of well-known 18th century style chess pieces typically associated with the French Regency period, and far later playing board executed by an artist in the second half of the 20th century.
The pieces make up a particularly fine full set in exceptional condition, all crafted from good quality boxwood and bursting with character, especially those knights. The possibly unique playing surface has been mapped by hand and beautifully illustrated with great attention to detail, each 'black' square featuring everything from fantastical scenes and expressive characters to flowers and animals. Hand signed by Taylor Stevens of 90 Farm Lane SW6, which is just a stones throw away from Stamford Bridge, London.
So much whimsy and joy to be found in this simple board game, a set that was particularly hard not to keep! The only condition notes to report are some slight wear to the board underside and edges, whilst a few chess pieces are ever so slightly wonky (in a charming way) The light Queen also bears a couple of spots of ebony stain from the finishing process.
