A masterful, way ahead-of-its-time piece of important Nordic design history - this is the Model 306 'Versatile' lamp by the father of Danish Modernism, Kaare Klint. Produced by Danish firm Le Klint (founded by Kaare's brother, Tage) the 1945 design has been long sought after for the SAD Gallery collection.

As the name suggests, the Model 306 is incredibly versatile, suitable as both a table and wall light. The heavy brass ball acts as the end of a pendulum, whereby if you desire for the lamp to change functions, you simply have to pick it up by the bakelite handle and rotate the base. Gravity will do the rest, whilst the exceptionally elegant sweeping brass arm retains its effortless poise in either position.

This is a particularly early example, and as far as condition goes this is just the sort of perfect patina that so many collectors and designers look out for. With all original hardware intact, the only condition notes to report are purely surface level. The original bulb holder was unfortunately beyond repair and has been replaced, but the in-line switch remains in use on the newly re-wired unit.

The lampshade is not included in the sale, and to be as sympathetic as possible to the design I would naturally recommend pairing this piece with a Le Klint pleated paper shade. Regardless of the shade however, it cannot be argued that this is one exceptional work of lighting design and engineering; a perfect example of Kaare Klint's design principles, balancing form with function with ease.
