Here's something you don't see every day! I have always been interested by unusual objects that don't conventionally meet the 'decorative' criteria, but I don't think there is any doubt about just how sculptural these original Expamet sales samples are.

Without even realising it, there is 100% certainty that you have walked past, on or under a long sheet of steel mesh. Invented by Englishman John French Golding in 1884 and quickly patented, what set this invention apart was its clear efficiency.

Unlike traditional methods, Golding’s process utilised every inch of the original sheet material, eliminating waste in what was a resource intensive Victorian period. The resulting mesh combined structural integrity and lightness, making it suitable for a huge range of applications which we all continue to benefit from.

These amazing samples could have been used as showroom display models, but given the applications of the mesh I would imagine they were taken around by travelling salespeople after the second world war (judging this by the original branded labels which describe each sample, as well as the eventual freedom to use the material for commercial purposes after the war ended)

Please note that these do not stand on their own, but display fantastically on shelves and even function perfectly as trivets for your hot pots and pans as illustrated!
