A wood-fired stoneware crock of good scale from the late 19th century, produced in France. The shape is of a tapered barrel form topped with a flat rim and two round lug handles which would have been used to carry the vessel using cane or a similar material.
The piece is coloured a rich deep red-brown with moss yellow ashing and patchy salt glazing from the kiln. From the personal collection of prolific English potter, Richard Batterham, the crock has been kept in excellent antique condition, remaining unmarked apart from a later ink code to the rim.
Provenance:
Richard Batterham's private collection.

Height: 22cm / Diameter: 20cm
