Magazine rack, Mathieu Matégot, Artimeta, France/Netherlands. 1950’s.
Like other notable industrial designers of the postwar era, Mathieu Matégot saw to new material techniques. This rare and colourful magazine/record holder features Matégot’s ‘Rigitulle’, where perforated metal is combined with metal tubing. The two-slotted rack has ample storage and is easily transportable with its handle. Matégot’s classic red is painted on the two external panels and the four rubber feet, but a very uncommon sage green is sandwiched in the centre and long legs. This design is simply executed, but is a real feat of engineering. This piece was made in Matégot’s height of focus on furniture and home accessories. Artimeta was the only external factory to produce Matégot’s designs outside of the two ‘Société Matégot’ factories. A true modernist piece, this design of the Atomic age is a blueprint for contemporary design today.
