Pair of Nickel Plated Postmodern Candlesticks. 1980s.
An unusual and very pretty pair of bright nickel plated brass candlesticks, with the warm base metal showing through in places from decades of wear and polishing.
In my opinion these are quite typical of the postmodernist design movement between the 70s and 90s. A glaringly obvious example of this appears here as the bold crowns that add just the right amount of flare and whimsy to these pieces, the perimeter of which is decorated with mounted glass cabochons in vivid green and red, encasing a metal star in each. Most likely produced in Europe during the aforementioned design era that moved us away from the austere and strictly functional rules of modernism, bringing forth ideas of exaggerated decorative elements and blended historical styles as we see here.
Once the candles are placed, they appear almost as though they have been dropped into a pool of metal, producing what is commonly known as the 'crown splash' in physics.
