Pair of rawhide henna table lamps, Morocco. 1970’s.
Produced in a traditional workshop, a pair of rawhide and steel table lamps decorated with henna dating from the 1970's, Morocco.
These lamps are a pure expression of traditional craft combining several beautifully made elements. Steel has been bent into organic yet sturdy tripod frames that flow into the natural features of the lamps, rather than forcing the materials into a ‘box’. Similar to traditional parchment, untanned goat hide has been used for the lantern panels for a bone-white canvas for the artisans to paint on. The hide has been stitched to the steel frames with attention to the thread mimicking the curvature of the metalwork. Terracotta red henna dye artwork is used on the first lamp to depict an scale-like pattern on all three panels and then on the second, features the scale motif as a border with additional symbols in the centre of each panel.
The first lamp (with the scale motif) has a historic tear; we find it to be a charming scar of the piece’s history and decided against repairing.
