'Pineapple' Jug Model 4621-2, Michael Andersen & Søn Bornholmsk Keramik, Denmark. Late 1930s.
A vibrant little stoneware jug, striking in soft teal blue, designed and produced by Michael Andersen & Søn Bornholmsk Keramik of Denmark.
Dating to the late 1930s, this playful piece is clearly of organic inspiration, taking the form of a pineapple with a cleverly formed leaf sculpted into an elegant handle and smaller leaves crowning the top above where the squat spout emerges.
Naturally the highly textured surface, reminiscent of its tropical lookalike, is mesmerising in the way in which light and shadow interacts with it. Seemingly in contrast to these natural elements, a striking glaze takes over the whole body of the vessel, which is in fact typical of this 1930s design and of course the Art Deco style.
