Pitcher, Just Andersen, Just Andersen Pewter, Denmark. 1930’s.
A designer that needs little introduction in the world of early Danish modernist pewter, Just Andersen has become one of the most recognised and collected makers of Scandinavian pewter of the 20th century. An early career designing for the legendary Georg Jensen led to him founding Just Anderson Pewter in 1918 and the innovations that followed. Andersen not only produced designs in bronze and pewter, but when financial adaptation was required he invented 'Disko Metal', an alloy of lead and antimony to mimic real bronze from his foundry.
This pitcher from the 1930's takes clear inspiration from Andersen's prior employer with its curvaceous but balanced form. It showcases a rich patina from nearly a century of use and despite the softness of pewter has held its shape perfectly. The crowning feature is no doubt the delicately wrapped and woven cane handle with an elegant vertically stepped design, in similarly preserved condition to the vessel itself.
