Rare bakelite desk fan, E.M.I., Netherlands. 1950's.
Rare bakelite desk fan, E.M.I., Netherlands. 1950's.
Both wall-mounted and free-standing, this petit post-war desk fan was produced by Utrecht-based Dutch manufacturer E.M.I. The specific model is a rarity today, the fan being in excellent vintage condition despite many years of use. Both the base, switch and motor housing are moulded from deep burgundy marbled bakelite, a predecessor to plastic. Attached to the motor is a bright brass fan shielded by a 'cage' featuring its classic wavy spokes, joining in the centre where the 'EMI' logo is emblazoned.
A simple yet striking little piece of machinery, the motor is undamaged but not wired due to safety reasons - it is something that can be easily admired as a showpiece nevertheless.

Retaining original E.M.I. manufacturing label and felt base.
Non-functioning, display piece only.
