Rare ‘Skaal’ Decanter and Schnapps Glasses, Jacob Bang, Holmegaard, Denmark. 1937.
A superb addition to the SAD Gallery collection of carafes and decanters, this rare Holmegaard set by Jacob Bang is one of our favourites.
Executed in frosted glass, the 1937 design depicts a jovial tipsy sailor in hand-applied enamel paint, the words "Skaal!" (meaning "Cheers!") emblazoned in red above his head. The accompanying schnapps glasses (which are particularly hard to find) bear the same phrase. A matching red rim to both the bottle and glasses is the finishing touch.
The cheerful cherry on top is a finely turned wooden stopper, this piece painted with blue stripes and finished with varnish to seal the timber from moisture. Other than some light surface crackling to the varnish, the set as a whole is in amazing original condition and the enamel paint still as vibrant as the day it was fired.
