Modernist rosewood bowl, Brazil, 1930's.
In a post revolution 1930s Brazil, Modernist Architecture was introduced on a small wave by the likes of Gregori Warchavchik who sought to accomplish his vision through a myriad of small workshops. This Rosewood bowl is a bridge between modernist ideas in aesthetics and materiality. The Scandinavian, notably the Danish designers such as Finn Juhl, gravitated toward Brazilian Rosewood as a desired material for the most exclusive commissions. The bowl is an extremely well executed hand turned piece with attention to the grain and simple geometry - ideas that echoed the modernist principles. The large diameter is blanched out with the central hole, whilst a sleek band surrounds the diameter of the bowl mirroring the design of a flying saucer.
