Another brilliant vase of nice scale by British potter Mike Dodd, featuring a singular lug handle, decorated with incised and wax-resist decoration, coloured with his very distinctive biscuit slip over porphyry ash glaze that results in those brilliant fractures or ruptures to the thicker pale surfaces, especially around the neck of the piece. A brilliant example of his work for a collector to cherish or decorator to style, those gorgeous earthy colours so versatile and reflective of his glaze formulas that make use of natural materials he has to hand.
Now retired from full-time throwing, Mike Dodd has been a prolific potter for more than 60 years, undoubtedly an icon of the craft - a thoughtful, humble and committed one at that. He is especially well known for his unique glaze formulas that sympathetically utilise local minerals and rocks. His wood-fired pots, no matter how ambitious, are all made to be useful items in the home whether they be vases, biscuit barrels, drainers, plates, or jugs. Some even gain an extra sense of character through their names, such as Dumpy, Tidy, Stanley and Vinny.
