Modernist Pewter Wine Jug, Oscar Antonsson, Athena Ystad, Sweden. 1938.
Modernist Pewter Wine Jug, Oscar Antonsson, Athena Ystad, Sweden. 1938.
Swedish Grace: a period of elegance, beauty and personified through the humble medium of pewter. This genre had lasting effects on design and the Swedish modernist movements, especially in the decade following. Antonsson uses the utilitarian silhouette of this wine jug as a canvas of simple Modernist etchings with acute attention to detail. The etching style is reminiscent of the pictorial folkloric art of the Nordic region, emphasising the strong connections these designers and ateliers had to the country's history and traditions. The result is a portly hen-like bird (possibly a quail) with a sleek handle leading from its crest to its tail. Compared to designs from the 1920s, this piece has minimal ornamentation. Here we observe and experience a homogeneous design where form and function are blended so simply, reflecting on the honed artistry of Oscar Antonsson.
The pewter surface showcasing a rich patina but otherwise in excellent condition, this exceedingly rare design adds a sense of whimsy to the ritual of pouring wine into your guests' glasses.
