Unique Arts and Crafts copper lidded pitcher, England. Early 20th Century.
Unique Arts and Crafts copper lidded pitcher, England. Early 20th Century.
A charming antique pitcher bearing the marks of a variety of techniques and a century of patination. The overall silhouette is quite modern, yet the hammered copper body draws the piece back to the Art and Crafts period and English craft identity.
The conical body is typical of pitchers of the period, yet the tapering of the foot is unique and creates a more pronounced shape, implying the focus of the designer’s attention towards the form of the piece, rather than ornamentation. The hammered texture and leather wrapping offer functional decoration; utilitarian and necessary of the construction yet uniformly beautiful.
The leather of mixed decades is wrapped tightly around a wooden dowel and secured by two brass flat-headed button screws. Brass features yet again atop the lid of the pitcher as a functional finial. The construction is quite perfect with only the verdigris highlighting the joints of the metal parts.
The wear is consistent with age and signs of restoration to the leather. A celebration of all things wonky and wonderful!
