Unique Sculptural Ceramic Egg Holder with Spoon, Portugal. Late C20th.
Unique Sculptural Ceramic Egg Holder with Spoon, Portugal. Late C20th.
Whimsical and thought-provoking, this ceramic egg sculpture very smartly plays with appearance. Are we sitting in front of a serving plate moulded to house both the boiled egg and small spoon? Alternatively, looking from above the boiled egg does appear to become the yolk in a sunny-side-up fried breakfast.
The crackled white glazing is a feature of its own and is not unlike the surface of cracked shells, the anonymous artist taking us on a journey with all things egg related and resulting in a soft and calming sculpture.
The stainless steel spoon was made for the Portuguese firm Herdmar Inox, the only clue in this unusual story.
The egg is a hand-painted ceramic piece with minor signs of wear, but consistent with age.
