Exceptional studio vase, England. Mid-20th Century.
A simply spectacular piece of English studio pottery. This curvaceous vase has been reduction fired, a process in which rather large natural iron pyrite particles in the clay have converted back to their metallic form and melted, resulting in a dramatically speckled form. The vase, a large and weighty piece, shows off a subtle pentadecagon body from the base to bottom of the neck, where it transitions to a more fluted stem. We recognise the expert skill required to build and successfully fire such a vase, and as such months have been spent researching the mystery makers mark stamped to the foot rim to no avail - as such it remains anonymous, but is certainly one of the most remarkable pieces of pottery in the SAD Gallery collection.
