Modernist silver-plate and rosewood coffee set, Italy, 1950's.
Modernist silver-plate and rosewood coffee set, Italy, 1950's.
What better way to enjoy a home-brewed hot drink than with this luxuriously Modernist Italian coffee set. Made entirely from silver plated brass, each piece features very finely turned solid rosewood handles, which are mirrored in the bright reflective vessel surfaces.
The design language and features are almost identical to those found in a folding magazine rack in the SAD Gallery archive, attributed to prominent Italian designer Cesare Lacca. Each piece in this set even bears the same production stamp, but it isn't conclusive that Lacca turned his eye to designing tableware in his career. In any case, this is an early example of similar sets that were produced in the 1950's/60's, characterised by the extremely high quality fabrication and execution. Each piece has aged beautifully over time, the sugar pot lid with the most notable patina.
